(Letter Writing)

Letter writing is a practical skill tested in Nepali exams and used in everyday life. Whether you are writing a formal application (निवेदन) to a school or an informal letter (अनौपचारिक पत्र) to a friend, knowing the correct format is essential.

Formal letters are written to officials, organizations, or people in authority.

Format:

(Name/Title of recipient) (Designation) (Organization/Address)

(Subject of the letter)

(Body of the letter in respectful tone)

Paragraph 1: State the purpose clearly Paragraph 2: Provide supporting details Paragraph 3: Make your request and express hope for a favorable response

(Your name) (Date) (Address)

Example Opening Lines for Formal Letters:

(admission request)
(bringing attention to an issue)
(job application)

Key Phrases for Formal Letters:

(Informal Letter)

Informal letters are written to friends, family, or close acquaintances.

(Place) (Date)

(Name),

(Opening greeting -- asking about their well-being) (Body -- share news, feelings, experiences) (Closing -- wishes and expectations)

(Your name)

Differences from Formal Letters:

Common Informal Letter Topics:

  • Birthday wishes to a friend
  • Inviting someone to visit (भ्रमणको निमन्त्रणा)
  • Sharing exam results or school news
  • Consoling a friend (साथीलाई सान्त्वना)

निवेदन (Application) vs पत्र (Letter)

A निवेदन is a specific type of formal letter -- usually a request or application to an authority figure. It follows a slightly more structured format and always includes a clear request statement.

Exam Tip: Nepali exams often specify whether they want a निवेदन or a पत्र. Read the question carefully and use the appropriate format. Using the wrong format will lose marks even if your content is good.

Key Takeaways

  • Formal letters use respectful language (तपाईं/हजुर) and a structured format
  • Informal letters are personal and use friendly language (तिमी)
  • Always state the purpose clearly in formal letters
  • A निवेदन is a formal request or application to authority
