Know Yourself: Interest Assessment

Congratulations on finishing your SEE exams! Before you rush into choosing Science, Management, or Humanities, let us pause and ask the most important question: What actually interests YOU?

Everyone around you -- parents, relatives, neighbors -- probably has an opinion about what you should study. But the best stream choice starts with understanding yourself. That is exactly what this lesson will help you do.

Holland's RIASEC Model: Six Types of Interests

Psychologist John Holland discovered that people's interests generally fall into six categories. Read each one and notice which ones feel most like you:

Realistic (R) -- The Doer: You enjoy working with your hands, fixing things, or being outdoors. You might love assembling electronics, gardening, or building things. Nepali careers: Civil engineer, agricultural scientist, electrician, pilot.

Investigative (I) -- The Thinker: You love solving puzzles, asking "why?", and figuring out how things work. You probably enjoyed Science experiments in school. Nepali careers: Doctor, researcher, software developer, data analyst.

Artistic (A) -- The Creator: You express yourself through writing, music, art, or design. You are drawn to creative and original work. Nepali careers: Journalist, graphic designer, filmmaker, architect.

Social (S) -- The Helper: You enjoy teaching, counseling, and helping others. You are the friend everyone comes to for advice. Nepali careers: Teacher, social worker, psychologist, nurse.

Enterprising (E) -- The Leader: You like persuading people, leading projects, and starting new things. You were probably the class captain or organized school events. Nepali careers: Business owner, marketing manager, lawyer, politician.

Conventional (C) -- The Organizer: You like structure, data, and keeping things in order. You enjoy making lists, budgeting, and following clear processes. Nepali careers: Chartered accountant, banker, auditor, administrative officer.

Self-Reflection Exercise

Take a moment and rank these six types from most like you to least like you. Your top two or three types form your "interest code." For example, if you are Investigative + Artistic + Social, you might thrive in careers like UX design, medical research communication, or educational technology.

Write down your top 3 RIASEC types and one career from each that excites you. There is no wrong answer -- this is about discovering yourself, not fitting into someone else's box.

Key Takeaways

  • Your interests matter more than anyone else's expectations when choosing a stream
  • Holland's RIASEC model gives you a framework to understand what kind of work energizes you
  • Your top types can point toward streams and careers that will keep you motivated for years
  • It is completely normal to have interests across multiple types -- most people do
